Hello everyone I am waiting to get a iphone 5? can anyone tell me what is better on the 5? thanks again Erica.
I don't know but I'm anxious to hear about it as well. I'm not eligible for an upgrade until next summer but that's ok.
The few details that make sense are.
1. It will have a larger screen. This makes sense due to all the video and games people like.
2. The battery will be better. That makes sense, because battery life is a major gripe for iPhone users.
3. True 4 G LTE. That makes sense, because the Galaxy S3 is that now, so Apple will need to up it or not sale them.
The main fact we know is I O 6 will run on it, and that will also run on the others, but it is better.
Apple keeps what the iPhone next version will have secret, and I believe they are working to make it better or simular to the Galaxy, a major competitor.
The Galaxy is really something.
I personally don't think it will be called iPhone 5. My vote got to iPhone 4G or just iPhone. I say 4G because we have the 4S now and that I think was for Siri, because the 4 and 4S are really simular.
CNET www.cnet.com has all the tracked ideas about what it might be.
Here is a link that is fun to check.

This is the direct link if that one doesn't work.

There's an app you can download for free from the app store for iPhone and iPad users called Mac News, and it has the Mac Rumors and Apple Insider websites built into the app, so you can keep up with the news about Apple. It's actually a pretty handy app for those who like to keep up on technology. As for the next iPhone, it's supposed to be a pretty big hit. There are rumors that it will sport a quad core processor, but I'm a little skeptical about that. If it does, that would be awesome, though.
Don't forget the new maps app with turn by turn directions. This will be nice to have.
If it works better than regularMaps it'll be worth it.
But is that an Iphone 5 exclusive, or jsut an IOS 6 update?
I'd say it will come with I O 6, so anyone with iPhone that can upgrade will have access to it.
The iPhone 4 S is the only iPhone with Siri on it, so that will only work on the iPhone 4 S and above since it uses Siri API's. As far as the next iPhone goes, I'm pretty excited about it. I've seen rumors that it's going to sport a quad core processor, but I'm very doubtful of that for a couple of reasons, one being battery life issues. In Apple's case, the speed of the processor doesn't really matter much, because of course the OS itself is made to be fast, even without a really powerful processor, so I don't think they'll push for a quad core processor until at least next year. I wouldn't be surprised if they use the same processor that's in the new iPad, the A5x chip. Of course that's a dual core processor with a quad core graphics unit. So over all, I'm pretty excited to see what the next iPhone's going to bring us.
not to leave out here a 4G chip, got to have one or the Iphone is still behind android.
Should be interesting, if I can get one for the wife. I am quite content with my 4S for now, and will probably be one of those who will buy an unlocked 5 later next year or some other time.
I hope the larger screen means bigger print for the massive number of middle-aged users who are not technically classed visually impaired, but who use the occasional reading glasses, and need better contrast, bigger screens and a better visual experience for people who are no longer 20-something. I realize this is a blind forum, but for sighted family members and friends, iPhone needs a bigger screen which defaults to bigger fonts. The retina display is already good for them in lots of different lighting conditions.
The 4S has ways to adjust this. Under accessibility even for sighted persons settings are available.
Even though the 4 S has ways to adjust all that, it would still be helpful if there was a 4 inch screen. More room for bigger letters.
I'm pretty happy with my 4S too. I wouldn't bock at a larger screen....and face buttons! Seriously apple! You have an entire edge to put buttons for music playback and other functions...if you want to. You DO want that, don't you Apple?
There's really no need for those buttons if you have the headphones on.
I'll have to look at the accessibility options. The invisible sighted people out there are those who can't use a magnifier because that's too much magnification, but they need things like the reading glasses and can still drive, and are excluded from small print that everyone around them thinks they ought to be able to read. This is a perspective we total lifers have not really had, because we have had to accomodate ourselves forever.
So I will go look there and see, but I can't see her using Zoom.
I agree that a larger screen will equal a better visual experience not just the font size but spacing and other visual factors that affect sighted people in more subtle ways.
Yes, but maybe the wait is over?
CNET along with many others will cover it on the 12th. Here is CNET's link and info.

Also, you can follow Mac Rumors on Twitter. their name is macrumorslive. Also, I wonder if the 4 inch screen will allow for four-finger gestures like the iPad. That was just a random thought. I think it would be cool to see that feature to come to the iPhone if the screen is big enough.
Leo, FYI, there is a font option for the native iPhone apps Mail, safari, notes, ETC that allows one to change the font up to something like 22PT. Also, the pinch to zoom feature is available in safari, without zoom running of course. I do agree that a larger screen is a significant adition for most users, and personally I think it would make for better typing.
Well its 4 inches, so that should help. No wider, but for sighted people suppose to be lots better, low glare and such.
Typing on a larger screen is nice, I can tell you from daily use of a phone that has a 4.8 inch screen. Feels nice in the hands, I have small hands.
How does that relate to a person that does not see? I'm interested, not being silly?
I have looked at the S3, but for me I don't think a larger screen makes me any differents. Infact if the stuff comes to me quicker on a smaller area its faster typing.
The iPhone is just taller, no wider, so for us it should feel the same in terms of using it.
Am actually getting the 5 bc am switching from AT&T to VZ with the hubby. Am excited but sort of annoyed with this new connector.
Well, before anyone gets annoyed with the new connector, you need to first realize how thin this thing's going to be. You haven't gotten your hands on it yet, so don't knock it until you try it.
I'm not going to switch to Verizon, because if I do, I'll have to pay a $400 security deposit, which is ridiculous, so I'm sticking with AT&T. I haven't had any problems with them anyway.
to answer your question about screen sise, if the screen is large the vertual keyboard has larger keys. this holds true for the sIII, that is why I like it.
Interesting. I'd think we'd want them close so we can move about easy, but not have to move to much. This is a reason I don't use my phone in the Landscape setting much. It seems to make the typing to spaced.
Thanks for your answer.
Well I think the whole point is that our fingers will be able to touch the keys a little easier so that we could probably type a little faster than we have been with the old 3.5 inch screen. Not sure how much faster, but yeah.
your correct to the last poster, I have had a phone that was 4.3 "HD2" and now 4.8 "samsung sIII" both were a treat to type on and it did not feel cramped.
Okay for us that are drooling and champing at the bit. If you've not ordered yet read this story. Makes me wait. I had said I didn't think Apple would release the new phone to dealers like Cricket quickly, but folks, it will be available with them on the 28th. Sweet stuff. Read on. Guess I've had a cold dip, so will wait.
http://reviews.cnet.com/8301-19512_7-57512927-233/why-you-should-wait-a-few-months-to-buy-the-iphone-5/
I got up at 3:00 and ordered 3 by 3:07 on the verizon site, and went back to sleep! Got up at 6:00 and the preorder site seemed to be either gone, or completely swamped with orders.
I was thinking of preordering once the phone came out, but I don't have enough money to do that. lol I'm just going to have to wait until it's released and I get some more money.
I'm happy with my 4S, but definitely chomping at the bit to get iOS 6 tomorrow. Don't say much about me when I can't wait a day for an iOS update, just shows how life is in a rut for me now I guess. If an iOS update is something I'm really looking forward to, and have the patience of your average teenager after, that speaks for itself and I'm no longer too uber snooty to admit it.
Looking forward to trying the new maps with the VoiceOver. Plus, anybody know if the VoiceOver voices are improved at all? I use the full not the compressed voice, at least on the iPhone, and sometimes it's kind of rattly sounding.
Yea Leo. Lol. The iPhone in any version is simply a great device for us.
Okay people here is a hands on review of the new baby. Yes hands on!
http://www.cnet.com/iphone-5/
I'm not aware of the improvement on the voices just yet. It will be pretty much the same as Mountain Lion, from what i've been told. Either its good or bad, you gotta check it out when you got IOS6 i guess.
Good news for us in the other side of the globe is that we going to get the iphone5 and the ios6 release pretty much about at least 12hrs before those from the states. Hopefully that will ease some server trafic.
I do wish it was possible to change the voice Voiceover used without having to go into International settings and change the region format. Granted it doesn't seem to hurt the phone any to do it this way so it's more of a minor inconvenience than anything else. But I just discovered an Irish voice that I like even better than the Australian Karen, so my phone is set to Ireland in region format just so I can use that voice. But I probably will end up getting a 5 someday because it sounds like even more of a space saver physically than the one I have now.
Bryan go into Settings Accessibility VoiceOver and use the Language Rotor button. Then you will have a rotor setting for Language where you can switch to Karen Australia or something.
I found the settings for it but I have no idea how you actually switch voices.
Never mind, figured it out. Thanks for pointing me in the right direction though.
Ok, for those who haven't gotten the 5 yet, but have upgraded to IOS6, did it take you forever to down lode it? I started it on a wifi connection about 5 this afternoon, and it's now only at 31%, and I have no idea why it's running so slowly, considering the fact that 99.9% of the time, the phone has just sat there except for the times that I've checked its progress.
I had that same issue when I tried to use ICloud to back up my phone, and it took forever to attempt to back everything up, and didn't even get to 50% before it gave me an error message telling me the backup couldn't be performed, but didn't tell me why, so I just gave up on it and went back to iTunes.
20 minutes for me. Maybe the servers are busy. Try later to night. If still having problems call Apple. I used my computer and iTunes and my internet home connection to do it.
Probably the servers are busy. I will wait to download for this issue. One thing that has been recognized is that most iPhone users have the latest version of IOS, and they do that by downloading it. The first day of a release will stress the servers. I sure hope apple sets up new servers to download the release from, but even then it'll be slow with a lot of other people.
I was one of the first ones to download it this morning, so I didn't have much of an issue with the server being slow. It did take forever to do its updating and rebooting, though. Just be warned that it'll take about 20 minutes to update and reboot if you're doing it over the air.
Took about 13 minutes or so to download. Then it did take a wile to install but once it did it seemed to work just fine. Maybe a teensy bit slow at first but nothing too inconvenient. I particularly like the Do Not Disturb feature and how you can schedule it to turn on and off at whatever time you need.
Here might be a reason why your upgrading was slow.
http://news.cnet.com/8301-13579_3-57516590-37/apple-apparently-fixes-ios-6-wi-fi-buag/
Oh and don't end up in a river depending on the Maps, now. Lol
Apple is getting slammed for messing up on this.
i heard that the maps a lot of them were wrong..according to apple it is tom tom's fault which is who they partnered with lol. i'm sure they'll get this fixed.
Apple said that they're working on the Maps. It should be fixed sometime soon, according to some news articles that I've read.
Saw the iphone5 today, as Australia is one of the first nation have them. Its thinner, perhaps about 1 3rd thinner than the iphone4 or the 4s. A touch longer, if those who saw a Galaxy s2, is about that size, but a touch shorter and nerrower compare to galaxy s2. Its also liter, i think its about the weight of again, galaxy s2. over all, its a sexy, slick phone. The feel of it is pretty much the same as 4 or 4s though, in terms of it got that glassy feel on the front, and the mat feel at the back. Not as aluminuim as i expected, as some review suggest that its little bit ipod, which is not true.
I downloaded the update for IOS 6 using Itunes and a wifi connected computer yesterday around noon Central time. It took about an hour to download and about 20 minutes to install. I haven't played with it much yet but am looking forward to doing so. Apparently my I-phone 4 now has Siri. Woohoo. I saw a sleep timer in the Tune-In Radio ap. That'll be awesome!
Well I don't think I'll actually be able to upgrade for at least another year but I do think I'll ask my GF to run me over to the local AT&T store sometime so I can at least see the new IPhone. My only concernis if I'll be able to get a carrying case and belt clip for it if and when I do get it.. My question right now s whether the upgrade for IOS 6 has the full version of Siri on it or whether that's just a feature I'd have to actually get a new phone for.
I wonder the same thing about Siri, Bryan.
I am very pleased with iOS 6 so far. took an hour to download it here and about 20 minutes to install I would say.
The iPhone 5 seems slick so far. I've deffinitly noticed a speed increase from my old iPhone 4. I've downloaded 44 songs over the LTE just to test it's speed in about just under 2 minutes. Plenty fast. I installed IOS 6 on my iPad and di not get any seri features.
Siri, as far as I know, has been available and will only be available on the iPhone 4S, the iPhone 5, and the newest iPad which came out earlier this year. I don't believe it's available on the regular iPhone 4 or below.
Pretty much what I figured. I probably will end up getting a 5 whenI can because I can definitely see where Siri could come in handy.
same here.
Siri only one the 4S and 5. There are a few other features that only the 4S and 5 have as well. If she is correct that is interesting. The 4 is now free if you sign up for a contract and I imagine will be 100 less at stores like Cricket and such next week due to them getting the 5.
I got up and didn’t leave my house until after 11 AM. Had some breakfast and arrived at my local Verizon store around noon.
No line. A good thing.
I think the iPhone feels light as described, but also compared to the 4S feels cheaper. Remember the 4 and 4S are mostly glass and this one feels like thin plastic on the front and tin metal on the back.
The edges are not smooth, so I think if your hand is sweaty a bit you’ll not drop it easy, a good thing.
I held up my 4S next to it and yes it is taller, but by so little you’ll never notice it if you upgrade after a day.
It’s just the same great device. I was able to turn on the Voice Over and she’s still kicking and the speakers great, but a bit larger on the bottom.
Earphone jack is on the bottom too, but we knew that already.
IPhones, and iPhone I guess, this one just might seem faster and if you have owned one before much lighter for a bit until you forget how your old one was.
The 4S feels slicker, more expensive.
I did not make a call, so can’t say about the call quality. I also didn’t upgrade, but might.
I could have picked one up and took it today. All the stores near me have stock and did today as well when I stopped in just to see as I had some business there.
My verdict? Sweet as ever, but pre ordering this time seems to have not been important and actually slower for use that wanted it as fast as we could get it.
Love it! Lol
I hear the people with an iPhone 4 see a great improvement going to a 5, while those of us on a 4S wouldn't see as much.
yeah exactly. I'm staying with my 4s until it no longer works.
I'd say so Leo for us. If you are visual you'll see some differents and if you test some faster speeds, but if you just upgrade that sweet 4S and use it daily and aren't comparing well it is wonderful with iOS 6.
Just one man's opinion. Lol
I was seriously going to upgrade, but now I can hold a bit and relax. I've got it. Lol
I quite disagree with the "feel plusticy" comment. It is pretty much the same, it is glassy, and the back its a little more metal. as i said, they suppose to be aluminuim back, perhaps thats one of the reason why. However, it doesn't have that "ipod or ipad" effect when you hold the phone on your hand. I do think, its one of the slickest phone in the market.
That's one of the reasons why, even though I probably can't upgrade till next year, I'm seriously considering having my girlfriend take me over to the local AT&T store so I can get a feel for some of the new features on the 5.
I've not felt the iPhone 5 yet, but for those who have felt it, is it still flat on the back like the previous generations? Or is it like the iPod Touch where the sides are almost like the iPad 2's and 3's?
Also, when the devices are quite slick, and it's been sitting out for while gotten cold, it's a bit like holding a slithery fish. I am quite blad for a case for my 4S.
Michael, its blaxck back for black, and white back for the white. not sure about the ipod and ipad thinggy though, haven't seen any evident of it just yet. pretty much same thing, imagine its your iphone4 or 4s, with thinner, liter, and longer. i think its one of the litest smart phone on the market.
I have seen all the new one and to me it is the lightest. Almost to light, but you'd get use to that after a while.
Going to start a war but oh well, save it, if my galaxy sIII where to brake, old sammy decided to bend over and let apple finish raping them over stupid stuff and I had no choice but to get an Iphone or no smart phone, I would take a 4S. Sorry but the new Iphone feels cheeply built, in portrid mode to cramped to type with and watching videos in portrid mode would be a pain because of the narrow screen. Before any one jumps on me and says "your just jellis of the Iphone 5 form facter", na keep it I like the galaxy sIII form facter light and its a large size.
honestly, if i've been offer a choice of galaxy or a galaxy note, i'll go for galaxy note. galaxy 3 is too big to fit in that pocket of mine, and too small to be useful as a tab. at least, with galaxy note, i can use it as a tab quite comfortably and can use it as a phone as well.
and again, if i've been giving the choice between galaxy 3 and galaxy 2, i'll go for galaxy 2 purely for the size.
If i've been given the choice bbetween galaxy 3, galaxy note, nexus7 and ipad, i'll go for nexus 7 size, and the capability and usability of an ipad.
in another word, galaxy 3 is rather, weird in terms of size for my point of view. too big to hold confortable as a phone, too small to function as a tab.
I'm not sure how you think the iPhone 5 is actually cheaply made. Its actually made out of better materials. metal vs plastic...
watch this
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6M5q5TRuAsY&feature=player_embedded
Personally, i think the 5 fits nicely in the hand. My biggest challenege so far is that I'm used to
being able to touch with exactness on my 4, and since the screen is slightly taller, i often end up touching just under what I wish to touch. Oh well, i'll get it. As I think i said in an earlier post, so far the LTE and speed is clearly the major advantage. Though for me, the upgrade was sort of not an option as I had dropped my 4 multiple times and broke the home and power button. As for the comments of cheaply built, everyone who sees the phone remarks how good looking the device is, and by no means does it feel cheaply built IMHO. I'm very glad not to have the glass back.
If someone could drop that thing from almost 6 feet in the air and the glass doesn't crack and there are only minor dents in the metal backing, that thing is definitely not cheaply made.
Ijust hope I'll be able to find a case and belt clip similar to what I have for my 4. I like the belt clip because it insures the phone is right there when I need it. I haven't felt it yet (although I hope to have the chance soon), but I'm getting the impression of a device about the size of if not quite the same shape as an IPod Touch. I did find out that I am, in fact, eligible for an early upgrade, although it would cost me about 250 dollars on top of the 199 bucks which is the contract price of the phone. But my actual upgrade time is quite a few months sooner than I was expecting. I figured it would be December of next year at least. I got the 2013 part right but it's August and not December. So I can wait LOL.
No, not cheaply made at all. Vary tight. It does feel cheaper made then the 4S however due to glass and on the 5 more thinner stuff. The switches are tight however and it probably can be dropped more offten without fear of cracking it.
I've never dropped mine, and keep it inside a wallet at all times when out and about, so lucky so far.
Brian, you can get the oterbox defender case, i think it comes with clip and that too.
I just got my iphone5... it arives today!
Those otterboxes are pretty expensive though from what I remember. I've also heard they're quite bulky. I might look into one if they don't have something at my local AT&T store whenthe time actually comes to upgrade. Or I could just keep it in my pocket with the screen locked.
I bought another case that has one piece for the phone, and other for your belt clip. It's very similar to what I had for my 4. It fits it even snugger, and is smaller as far as excess material goes.
Sounds nice. And of course I'll have to buy a car adapter so I can charge it on long car trips if necessary. I did that for my current phone and it came in handy quite a few times on camping trips with my GF. I would have hated to have an emergency situation come up and have a dead phone, especially since I'm currently the only one with an active phone at the moment. Think I'll help Sandra make some x-lax laced brownies for her brother's girlfriend. She's the one who ran the bill up on Sandy's phone. Grrr...
Actually otterboxes can be found for really good prices. Check out www.shopper.com.
I'd take a few control buttons (play, pause and the like) on the site over a "slicker design" any day. I'm really tired of having to unlock my phone and double-tapping with two fingers to stop whatever I'm listening to. Call me old fassioned or nit-picky, but I miss having at least a couple buttons. They have alllll that room on the sides; they COULD do it.
If you use ear phones that have those little button things on them, you could actually press that button and it would actually start/stop music, as well as answer/end a call. If you prefer not to use earphones, well, unfortunately I can't offer you many other suggestions!
Anybody else use the cases from Executive Products?
I see they have two types, I was happy with mine for the PAC Mate but wonder how their iPhone cases are. I also appreciate not a lot of extra bulk: it's been nice to be able to stick it in my pants pocket for sure.
Also, another comment to the buttons, if you just double tap the home key and swipe over you can pause or move to previous next track.
I like my simple iPhone case..it makes the phone a bit thicker and heavier.
Also you can change your keyboard reactions to simple touch.. Works for many things and makes them easier to operate in my opinion. Not in the music, but than ask Siri.
Hey baby, could you play the next track? hahaha
Seriously just say "play next track. or tell her the name of the track you want to hear. "What hurts the most." Just came up on my music list, so there you go.
I'm still using a iPhone leather wallet. I just got a new one from RadioShack. 3 cards slots, phone, and under the slots money. Folds over to close. Has a thick strap if you want to carry it like a radio, or you can remove it and just slide it in your pocket. Really thick leather, better then the one I had to replace because it started coming apart. $60, so not cheap, but worth the money I think.
I haven't been unlucky to drop the girl, but if so this wallet is really thick and padded.
Siri is fine. It's normally not a problem. But I like to walk around and do things while listening to music or a book. If someone's trying to talk to me though I have to take the phone out, unlock it, then tap it. It's fine, but I'm so used to the shuffle where I could just shut it up at will by hitting Pause. For my wife it's even longer because she's fully sighted, so when she's doing something and listening to a book, it takes her a while to get things paused to respond. It's not the end of the world, but it is a little inconvenient. The earphones with controls are a good alternative, but are they actually good earbuds in terms of sound? Having to be forced to use a particular type of headphone is just silly. There's plenty of space for even two or three more buttons, so I honestly don't see what the big deal would be to make that happen.
I agree about the buttons.
Depends on your ear size. The buds that came with your phone are really good if they fit and don't fall out. The new Earpads are suppose to be even better sound and fit wise. There are lots of headset on the market depending on what you want to pay.
For your wife when listening to a book she should turn voice over off. That way her responding will be touching the answer button.
For Real, you meant Earpod? They are much better compare to the last generation earphones. However i think Apple earphones are decent enough for day-to-day use. Of course, you can spend a little more and get a mid range quality earphones, some do support the music features that you want.
Remember though, this is a phone, it is not a music station like Nanno or such, it is not design specific for music enjoyment.
Do you like them Butter Cup? I'm going to buy a pair to see if A-pple's brag stands up. They came with your phone, so you can tell?
I really think the iPhone is a great music source and sounds just like an iPod that is a music source. Get the right settings and some good earphones and your phone sings. Its got an E Q and everything, so why not a music box too?
Even the earphones that came with the older iPhones had some pretty good sound quality. Surprising since they're eminating from such technically small speakers, but it really was really good. Obviously, it's not as good as playing the music on huge speakers and things, but generally, unless your iPhone/iPod/whatever's docked, you're almost always listening to music on the go with them anyway.
the new ear budds are great. they fit the ears better, and they offer lots of low end when listening to music with bass. I listen to a lot of music that has great bass guitar and the tunes sound sweet in these budds.
I haven't read the whole thread, buut I've had a look at an iPhone 5, since I only have the 4 myself. The iPhone 5 is very slightly longer than the 4 and 4s, but about the same width. It also has an aluminum back rather than the glass one and there are LED things in the back of said phone apparently. Also I've been told the iPhone 5 has a faster processor and a camera is better. Also, if you have any useful vision, apparently the display is a lot clearer. When picking the phone up, I noticed it was a lot lighter and somewhat thinner than the 4 as well.
Hope that helps.
Got to take a look at the iPHone 5 myself. I couldn't tell the aluminum backing was there until I examined it a little further, because the aluminum is smooth, and it almost feels like the glass that you'd feel on the iPhone 4 and 4 S. It's noticeably lighter and taller, and I loved how light it was. I can't wait to get one when I have the money.
Nor canI, once my upgrade time rolls around again. Ten it'll be cheaper.
I'm starting to think the world won't be happy until we all have computer implants. I mean look at this stuff, every year it gets smaller and smallerl Soon the phones will be inside of us, and the displays will intigrate with our retinas and eardrums so that we can see thedisplays super-imposed over our actual vision, and only we will be able to hear the audio.
That last would be nice LOL.
actually outside of the apple eco system phones are getting bigger and thinner like my s3. Note and note II that is coming out soon. Its a 5.3 inch screen. Just wanted to clear this up.
Well I don't know if I want Siri controlling me or not. I mean, just think? hahaha
Um, starfly, you obviously haven't have the chance to look at iphone5. Its thinner and much lighter than any other smart phone in the market. Include your s3 and that. Granted it doesn't have a 4.7 or 4.8inch screen, but seriously, i don't think i want a phone anything bigger than a 4 inch or 4.3 inch screen.
If i would go for a s3, i would more likely go for the Galaxy Note instead.
Phone that big better come with a microwave included
A little fat to add to the fire!
